Official Zelda Artists: A Work in Progress

Honestly, right now, I don't know if Koizumi did these all himself or what but I know he was kind of put in charge of the manual.
  


Yoichi Kotabe : 小田部 羊一 : Youichi Kotabe, Yaichi Kotabe, Yohichi Kotabe
I'm betting he did a lot of other stuff too but, honestly,  the way they talk about the art in interviews... it's a little confusing to know who did what. The watercolors are absolutely his though

Ah, could he have done the items too? Imai does darker corners. The palette is similar but also not as spot-on as the other guy's. Honestly I can't figure out what Imai would have done in the 2 LttP Player's Guides if not this either. Oddly I think he may have done some maps in the early Nintendo powers... but he would have been a MUCH less developed artist if I'm right. Because they are pretty rough in comparison.

Kazuhiro Amachi :
Could be the simple maps, maybe the items as well? Kinda the same colors and styles. Maybe they did the items as well. They're in a very clean, graphic, style as well.
See if the LA items are credited in the LA guide. I do not believe they were. I think only Kotabe is mentioned as an illustrator in that.


Ken-show :
I can not figure out why this guy is in here unless he did the official items for Metroid II: Return of Samus. Which are in the Super Game Boy guide. Because then he could have done the new Zelda items in the German LttP guide: they only appear in that one guide. Like the 4 swords and 2 shields. The coloring on the tunics also look the same, though this tunic art is seen elsewhere with flatter colors. These bows and boomerangs have also been redone.

Check the golden bee. I believe that also appeared in a Nintendo Power, see if he is credited.

Probably not the simple items and maps from German LA because nothing like that is in the Metroid art in the Super Game Boy guide. But it's weird because the items for the German LA guide ARE in the Super Game Boy guide... argh..

So did they do comics for Wanpakku, which would mean they worked for Tokuma Shoten like some other Wanpakku comic artists, which makes me wonder if they were at Work House too? idk, style looks pretty different

Just finished 1200dpi scanning one of the most incredible guides ever made for Zelda. There's so much mind-blowing art in it, including Terada's, that was never anywhere else that I can't even pick for this post & had to do features on Twitter all week. Thank you to Daniela and FenrisFang: without both of you, over 20 years ago now, who knows how long we would have gone without knowing about this incredible book and the utterly amazing art it contains.

Apologies that the cover is so beat-up and that there is some writing on the RAWS, this is my literal childhood copy and I wrote down some milestones (like when I beat the game.) The pages themselves are all in pretty good shape though.

File Information:
  • Being Uploaded: One zip has 1200dpi RAW tif files
  • One zip has 1200dpi RAW jpg files
  • One zip has lightly edited 1200dpi jpg files
  • The largest pdf is the exact same 600dpi files and was saved as uncompressed
  • There is a zip and a pdf with compressed 300dpi files: if you need to save on space or bandwidth
  • The other files were made by archive.org's software and will have compression

I only archive works that have been out-of-print for decades. I will not post anything that is in print or that gets reprinted.

This is a really fun piece that has a lot of Mario art and some really great illustrations for Link from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. It's from a postcard and was scanned and sent to me by Ikhana, who was a Guinness Record holder for the largest Zelda collection at one point. There's 7 total: Link, Zelda, a talking tree, a fortune teller, a fairy, one of the blacksmiths, and Agahnim.

There was art created for the Nintendo Satellaview that was broadcast, it wasn't part of the download package, so the only way we have them is because someone recorded it on VHS, saved it, and got it online. The source for these is Makuchan on YouTube. You can find out more about the games from the BS Zelda Homepage.

I had some of them uploaded but recently went back and searched for any I missed. I believe I found 3 more. I have them next to their watercolor images that are (mislabeled and) in the Zelda 1 section of Hyrule Historia. The watercolors were likely done by Yōichi Kotabe.

This is an additional publication that came with the December 20, 1991 issue of Marukatsu Super Famicom (マル勝スーパーファミコン) volume 20. It was published by Kadokawashoten.

It's a guide for first part of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Triforce of the Gods) and the back of the book contains a small manga for each of the first 3 Zelda games. Hyrule Fantasy (Author: Tsukasa Nishino,) The Adventure of Link (Author: Ayumu Takanaga,) and A Link to the Past (Author: Show Honda.) The manga is read in the opposite direction than the front of the book.

They seem to have interview quotes with Miyamoto in it that do confirm a simple little timeline. Like obviously there was one but it's a small fun fact about it: https://twitter.com/makgameadv/status/1620227664715055107

This is also a cool little book because it has even more manga examples of Link with a fairy companion years before the introduction of Navi. The novels, gamebooks, and manga are interesting for reasons like this.
