New Entries Uploaded (With UPDATES): Check for Yours & Just Hours Left!

I have responded to all the contest emails that had entries in them. (I still have a few non-entry emails left.) If you have not heard back about yours, please resend with the image attached and comment here or note me on DA or Facebook to let me know it's not going through so I can add your email to the contest email's safe list.

We currently have over 126 beautiful pieces by 110 amazing artists!

If you do not see your entry in the flickr gallery, let me know ASAP. I need you to help me double check these things. If it is not in there, there is a small risk it will get missed for judging, (though I will do another pass through of all the emails before I start, just to be safe) so your help is appreciated! Below I will post the list of current participants with valid entries in. Check that for your name as well. I will be updating this list until the contest deadline happens.

You can also find the ones from DeviantART (it's not all of them, just the ones on DA) in this group folder. Please honor the artists and leave them a nice comment if you have some time! Thank you to everyone!

You still have until midnight, PST, November 30th, 2012, to get in entries and updates! That's around a day and a half left to do what ever you need to do! But, please do not wait any longer than you have to get something in. Emails sometimes error and I can not make exceptions on the deadline. The "midnight" deadline is slightly loose in the sense that, as long as your entry is in my mail box by the time I check it, it will be counted. If it comes in while I'm checking, that's too late. So, while that gives you a few extra moments, do not risk waiting a second past midnight, November 30th, on this PST Time Zone clock.

And, yes, you can update anything about your piece all the way until the deadline. Including the art. You can even update it after the deadline, but anything that comes in after the deadline will not be counted towards or judged for the contest: it will only be included with the other entries for the spirit of the event and so people can use it on their calendars if they want. Basically: If you finish late, or want to change something later, you can still send your piece in to be included with the other calendar pieces, but anything that comes in after the deadline will not count towards the "contest" part of the event. Only what I have AT the deadline will count towards the contest.

EVERYTHING must go to the contest email, historyofhyrule.contests@gmail.com  I can not accept notes or comment, anywhere, as valid entries unless we agree to it before hand. Other notes and comments can only be used to notify me if you think something has gone wrong.

& thank you to everyone who has entered so far, everyone who is going to enter, to the people who have commented on entries, and to everyone who has shown interest in it! I can't wait; it's so exciting! Good luck to you all!

If you haven't heard about the contest yet, or would like to join us in this collaborative event to make a free, downloadable, Zelda calendar for next year; please see this info thread! It has everything you should need to know. You can also look at the post I made just before this one to get a better idea of what it's about. The contest ends at the end of November.

At this time I am only checking the contest email, historyofhyrule.contests@gmail.comnot my other message centers.

If you see an error, please let me know ASAP. I'm human and make mistakes; I want to ensure everything is right~ which means I need your help to double check things. I'm happy to make corrections to any aspect surrounding your art.

If you sent something in, and do not see your name on this list, or your piece in the flickr gallery, please re-send your email. The list and gallery are current, to the best of my knowledge, as of Nov. 17, 2012.

New Doujinshi Added: Together + Bonus Comic

I totally forgot to post that I had added this back before I went in for surgery. It's another wonderful doujinshi, called "Together," by Usagi Paradise (Misa) with a guest appearance by Minato. It's one of the rare ones for Spirit Tracks, but it also features Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess: Link's Crossbow Training. There is also a Smash Brothers bonus comic that came with it. Enjoy!

Prize Update

Hey guys, I have an update on the prizes!
So, Fenrisfang was donating a really high quality ocarina as one of the prizes. That hasn't changed, but she's actually willing to part with an even better one that seems even more fitting -so the old one is being switched for this new one! Normally I would never change what's being offered, just incase I'd inadvertently remove something that someone was entering for a chance at, but I think you'll see why I'm making the exception. Being able to offer this new one is mind blowing cool to me! She's amazing! ♥

Here's the new prize!
(More info on the contest can be found here)

It's a 12-hole Alto Ocarina, it has more of a range and is bigger than the old prize. It's also green with a Triforce on it, (almost like the Ocarina of Time!) and has a nifty little pouch to protect it. I'm also going to look at purchaing a Zelda Music book from Songbird to offer with this... (If they have a 12 hole one.)

In other prize news: A while back I tried to pre-order 3 Skywayrd Sword Link figurines, the really nice ones from Figma:

I do not normally like to announce prizes until they're in my hands but, these don't come out until October and I've never used the shop before. I'm simply wary about them arriving. So, IF they arrive, 2 of them will be prizes. If the pre-order is canceled because the orders can't be filled- I'll be looking for other awesome things to fill the slots. I only bring this up because a few people have asked me about these as prizes  ;p To reiterate: To offer 2 of these as prizes IS in the plans, but they can not be guaranteed at this point.

More 4 Koma Translations!

Okay, so these all haven't been scanlated: but for reasons yet named, I had to go through and find which panels we already had translations for that aren't yet posted on the "Main Site." Go here to see them all.

Many of these translations originate from the old site, ie: sometime back in 2002-2004. And I also realized that I'm missing some of the ones from Annie's old site, Zelda no Densetsu, and from TML's old site, The Grand Adventures. Does anyone still have these saved somewhere?

Alright! With that out of the way, I'm about to get back to updating with the new contest entries: and then I'll do the lottery drawing to see who won the participation prize! Can't wait!

Doujinshi: New Spanish and French translations added!

Finally! I'm so happy to be able to post these. Clyde1914 was kind enough to come along and help me out by typesetting these ~because the translations had been sitting around for far too long!

French: Let's Sparta was originally translated from Japanese to English by Rinael, and then translated into French by Mamandine. I cleaned the pages, and Clyde1914 edited in the text for this version.

Spanish: Mori no Sasayaki was originally translated from Japanese to English by Rinael, and then translated into Spanish by Nintendraw. Feri-san did the localization and helped the translation as well. I cleaned the pages, and Clyde1914 edited in the text for this version.

Hope you enjoy! And, if you don't follow us on Facebook and Tumblr, please do! I often update Facebook far more than I do here. I also noted there that I've been getting sick on and off- (I think it's a mix of my thyroid acting up and my dog being gone, I was probably only "up" for about 6 hours this whole weekend) -So, apologies for the prolonged absence and the lack of replies from me. Everyone is incredibly understanding, I just wanted to let people know I am here, and am slowly chipping away at them. (But don't be afraid to ask if I got your letter! Sometimes the spam box grabs them and eats them)

New Doujinshi Added: In my Life, That Time Was Not by Gantanshijin

I didn't realize how long it had been since I added a new doujinshi to the site! Well then, that's easily fixed. Here's a cute little one for Twilight Princess. I don't know much about the author so, if you do, please tell! Go read it now!

A Special Treat: Never Before in English; Part 1 of a Manga for the Original Legend of Zelda Game.

I'm so incredibly thrilled to finally be able to post the translated pages for the first part of the Ran Maru manga for the ORIGINAL Legend of Zelda. A huge amount of gratitude is due to Brigette for translating this, (and for continuing to translate the rest,) to Ingie for helping smooth out the incredibly difficult dialog, and to Beno for making these awesome "English" covers for me to use.  It took me a while to clean and type-set it, but I certainly think it was worth the effort. While you're at it, check out Ingie's epic fanfiction Fortitude!

In my opinion, it's one of the best Zelda comics there is. -Coupled with the 3 volumes by Ran Maru for The Adventure of Link, it's a great series! They're incredibly dark and more true to the games than most of the works by other authors. Continue to flip through past the English and you'll see what I mean. Don't let Link's old-school 80's appearance fool you into thinking these are nothing but cute.

Hyrule Histoira: The Most Important Developments

Kotaku got an exclusive first look at Hyrule Historia in English. I'm so happy to see it's essentially the same book. That was my first hope. My second one? Looking at the 10.2x7.2 for the Japanese version versus 12x9 for the English version: it does appear that the art is going to scaled up. Thank god. A small part of me was worried they'd just leave the images at the same size and just make the text area bigger; even though it was clear from the original pdf's released by the publisher Shogakukan that the route they're taking would be an easy route. All the art was overlayed and scaleable in those.

The other great thing? Because the aspect ratio isn't the same, it looks as if they've moved some of the art around ever so slightly. This means that parts that were covered by an overlapping image in the Japanese version might be able to be better repaired with the help of the English version. You can see what I mean about that below, with Link's foot being in different places on the red piece of art.

That's it for me: I came online to fix some layout code, did that, so I'm off again. I still got a dog to cuddle.

Monday, August 20, 2012

I'll be gone a while, my dog is on her way out; a small favor:

I might be gone for a while. My dog has anywhere from 12 hours to a month to live, so I'm going to be hanging out with her. She's the most awesome dog I could ever have, and I'm going to miss the s* out of her. She's like my freakn' familiar. My soul mate of a dog. On Friday she was fine, on Saturday she was acting a little off, on Sunday I knew it was dire. Today, Monday, they drained 1.5 liters of fluid out of her chest and said there was more. It's most likely a reaction to cancer in her blood. Treatments for that are not an option for her because of other conditions. We might get lucky and be able to drain again, I have to play it by ear. So I might be gone for a few days, I might be online sometimes, just whatever I feel I need to do not to lose it. We're going to go hang out in a mountain meadow and eat steak and cheesecake I think.

It's been a rough year and, I know this sounds dumb as hell BUT, if you could do anything for me: please enter the fanart contest. I started that thing last year to cheer me up because, hell, if I can't draw I sure as hell want to see you draw. I want to see your beautiful art; it distracts me, it makes me happy, it makes me feel like a whole artist again. So, as trivial and weird as that request sounds: it really means so much to me and it's awfully depressing if it fails. But, I'm so physically exhausted from the little emotional roller-coaster of the past few years that I'm having a hard time promoting it. Could you guys help me make sure it doesn't fail? Help me make something really freakn' cool happen? I would love to come back from this and see the giant  collaborative work that it could be. I need something to look forward to. It doesn't matter how good you feel you are or aren't as an artist. Don't be so silly - It's not about it being a contest, (there's a reason I put up my own money for the prizes,) it's about encouraging artists to create awesome art they have FUN with. I'd rather think of it as a collab: but I like giving stuff away. So, please, have some fun for me, push yourself a little, and then I'll have something fun to look forward to when I come back from this ordeal. Zelda rocks, and so do all of you.

Much love,
~Melora

Announcing a New Early Participation Prize for the Fanart Contest!

We need more entries! So, another participation prize it is! I'm doing things a little differently this time. Finish and send by Midnight, Sunday, September 16, 2012 for chance to win one of these 3 prizes. There will be only one person selected for this but they get to pick which they want: (a) A pre-order for a copy of the English language Hyrule Historia, a (b) 12 month DeviantART subscription, or (c) a Link plusie and Ocarina with music booklets.

Please read the main info thread that explains the rules, guidelines, and sizing for the contest if you have any questions and certainly before you start on your piece or concept. The actual contest doesn't end until Nov 30, this is just a bonus event for early participants.

Not MIA; just working on stuff for the site

Hey guys, I'm not missing~ I'm just working on editing so we can get caught up on stuff for the Translation Project. There's LttP manga, LA manga, doujinshi, little mini-mangas like this one below, etc. And, if you notice, just 2 pages actually take a lot of work to clean (let alone typeset.) But, that doesn't mean we couldn't still use translations for things! If you know Japanese pretty well, and see something you like on the site, just let me know when you'd like to get started and I'll get you what you need!

We could also use people who are writers- as in  Fan Fictions or professionally- to help localize the rough scripts. (You'd be proofreading at the same time.) This takes a lot of common sense and creativity. You'd need to keep the literal Japanese scripts as accurate as possible all while helping them read better and sound more natural for the English speaking audience. But I'm only looking for people who are really confident in their abilities; not people who just dabble and may not have the best spelling or grammar skills. Your final has to be mistake-free: because you really can't trust editors like me to catch things ;) It's definitely NOT my area of expertise.

Right now I'm actually not looking for more editors (cleaners and typesetters) UNLESS you've done it a lot before and can swear on your favorite pet's grave that you should be able to finish in short order. Normally I work with people and give them plenty of time to get things done but, right now, I'd rather try to crank it out myself than wait or spend the time teaching. So, if you think you'd be fine left alone with directions, cool! Hit me up. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

I'm also not currently looking for people to translate into other languages. We don't have enough editors. So I need to catch up before we can go there again.

So, yeah, I'll still be around to answer emails for the contest but, I may skip days here and there during the slower times so I can focus on this and I wont be on the forums, DA, or Facebook a whole lot.

Lottery for Hyrule Historia has been done!

Thank you to everyone who was able to get entries in by June 30th! I did the lottery style drawing for these early participants, to see who would get the copy of Hyrule Historia; and it hit on #16, which was the number assigned to WaffleTea. Congrats! Here's her piece below. And, I'm sorry to the other wonderful people who entered so far~ I will be wishing you luck for the future! If I had the money, it would be a book for everyone! Though I should be announcing another participation prize and deadline soon. Again, all the contest info can be found in the first post here. The real deadline is still months away.

The Goddess
"I painted this particular scene to show that moment when the goddess Hylia was given the task of protecting the Triforce. There and then, Hylia turned to face the five tribes of the surface who bowed to their goddess and protector."

In other news... I'll be a little scare because it's sort of vacation time for me right now: but I do have a few more replies to get to, some updates to do, and I need to get some stuff to people doing other Zelda-related projects. That's my first focus. So, if you're waiting to hear from me about the contest: I'll try not to take too long, but it might be just a little while. Thanks guys, you're already making this event great!

Translated Doujinshi: Change of Gradation

This one was way cuter and way more interesting that I originally thought it would be. As I was editing in the text  I was really getting into it. So, this Zelda doujinshi is Change of Gradation by RengeYa, or Inui. I have seen very little work by this artist and, at a glance, their skills don't seem as developed as some other doujin-ka: but there's a charm and thoughtfulness to this that many other doujinshi are lacking. Incredible thanks must again go to Rinael, she's done so much translating for us~ Just as much thanks to Fox Lee, who did a wonderful job localizing this one~ I cleaned and typeset (not my best job but the translation had been sitting around too long)~ and another huge thanks go to Kyoukankaku for helping translate the first page on short notice. I had missed scanning it and didn't realize that until I was almost done editing. Enjoy!

It's a Twilight Princess True Form Midna x Link Romance. It features Shad, Princess Zelda, and Telma. 41 pages, from 2007.

New Doujinshi Added: Tokidoki Dokidoki Tasogaredoki

*laughs* I really wish I knew Japanese- can anyone read the title on this for me?  Tokidoki Dokidoki Tasogaredoki (sometimes - *heartbeat* - twilight time) or (Sometimes During Twilight, My Heart Beats Faster) Thanks for the translation Rinael!

Anyway, I'm currently just calling it Raspberry Stars because it's got raspberry stars on the cover; totally scientific formulas over here. It's a really cute, but short, Zelda doujinshi by Misa and Minato. I don't have a lot of Minato's work on the site, maybe because it's mostly in newer doujinshi, but I really adore her distinct style. Go here to check it out!

In other news I'm going to try to get to contest stuff first, and then I don't know where to start... There are a lot of doujinshi that need to be edited, but I don't know if my arm is well enough for that yet. So I may try to work on the next section of the official art gallery, (Adventure of Link,) or get the publication's section more up to date: There are a lot of doujinshi that we don't have that I've found, that I can add to the un-obtained/scraps section. Plus, Karnella has been extremely helpful in sorting out the info on the artist and finding the doujinka's websites, and I really need to add that info sometime soon.

More doujinshi on the way!

In the coming weeks these will be some things that will be showing up in our collection! Some of them are too new, so we won't be scanning them right away but: know that these will one day be recorded on the site. Again, huge thanks to Joouheika for always sharing! Several of these are hers :3

I'll be adding info for them to the site in the coming days. When that happens, you'll find it on this page.

New Doujinshi Added: Empress

I am extremely excited to be able to post this. I've been wanting to see this since I found an image of it on an archived doujinshi seller's website that was no longer in business. It seems to be extraordinarily rare but, thanks once again to the fabulous Joouheika (aka Fuji,) it's no longer lost to the world. I'm so indebted to her for her efforts and how much she shares with all of us.

This is Empress, another stunning Zelda doujinshi by one of my favorite doujinka, Dogstars/Inu Nishimachi.

And, once again, I should remind all of you to check out Joouheika's Tumblr. It's FULL of really awesome translated Zelda web-comics, stuff you will not find anywhere else. ...now, enjoy!

Newly Translated Doujinshi: Promised Forest

The Zelda doujinshi Promised Frest, aka Promised Forest, by Usagi Paradise and a few other artists, has been translated into English and uploaded to the site for your enjoyment! It's a charming collection of stories involving Link and Saria. It was translated by our wonderful Rinael and beautifully edited by our awesome new team member Zippy. Be sure to check it out:

In other news, I'm finally back online after having surgery for my right arm. Updates should start flowing now that I'm around.

History of Hyrule's 10th Birthday & CONTEST!

10 years ago today I opened History of Hyrule.
In honor of that, I had to get the calendar contest announced today!

PRIZES: There's more ocarinas, manga, toys and figurines, and I'm also giving away a bunch of copies of Hyrule Historia. Here are just some of the prizes so far:

In fact, if you get an entry in before the end of June, you'll have a chance to win a copy of Hyrule Histoira just for participating!

CHECK IT OUT!
Go read about it! Get inspired! And enter so we can make it freakn' AWESOME!

Again, this contest is really just being held to make a free 2013 calendar for everyone: so it's also kind of a collab. Even if you don't care about prizes~ consider entering just to make something that every Zelda fan can use and love.

Spread the word so it doesn't suck!

The theme is History of Hyrule, so anything you could imagine happening in the history of all of the land should work!

Read about it here

And, if you have any questions, just ask!
I'm so excited. & Thanks for making all the years so great!
