A long time ago, a great king ruled over Hyrule.
Narration:
王は トライフォースの力を正しく使ったので ハイラルは栄えていた
Since the king used the power of the Triforce justly, Hyrule was prosperous.
Narration:
しかし 突然の事故で 王は なくなり
However, the king's life suddenly came to an end.
Narration:
悲劇は始まった
And so, the tragedy began to unfold.
Narration:
王には 王子ぞ姫があった
The king had a son and a daughter.
Narration:
王子は 秘かに野心を持って王位を継いだが…
The prince had ambitions he kept hidden, and succeeded to the throne, but...
Narration:
うけつぐべき３つのトライフォースはなぜか２つしかなかった
Though there should have been three Triforce parts for him to inherit, he only ever received two of them.

The Triforce has three parts?!
Zelda:
兄王は 必死になって トライフォースを 探し求めたが 見つけることはできなかった
"The young king desperately searched for the Triforce, but he was unable to find it."

Narration:
そんな時…… 妹の姫がその行方を知っているらしいと兄王おかかえの魔術師がつげた
Around that time... A magician serving the young king told him that his sister, the princess, seemingly knew of its whereabouts.
Narration:
実は 兄王に野心をふき込んだのも この魔術師であった
In truth, it had been this very magician who had sparked the ambitions within the young king.
Narration:
兄王は 姫に つめよった
He confronted the princess.
Narration:
おどしたりなだめすかしたり 何とか聞き出そうとしたが 姫はガンとして口を割らなかった
He threatened her, he pleaded with her, anything to make her reveal the truth, but the princess' lips were firmly sealed.
Narration:
魔術師は姫を拷問にかけようとしたが
The magician tried to torture the princess...
Narration:
さすがの兄王も それだけは ゆるさなかった
But, even the young king would not permit him to go that far.
Narration:
業をにやした 魔術師は 兄王の留守に魔法をかけて 白状させようとした
Losing his patience, the magician tried to use magic to make her confess, while the king was away.
Narration:
しかし 姫が必死で 抵抗したので
However, because the princess kept resisting desperately,
Narration:
ついに 魔術師は 姫の魂を奪い取る魔法をかけ始めた
the magician finally began to cast a spell that would take away the princess' soul.

そこへ 兄王がかけ込んできた
Just then, her brother rushed in.
Narration:
魔術師が 姫を殺してしまったと思った 兄王は
Thinking the magician had killed the princess,
Narration:
逆上して魔術師に斬りつけた
The young king became enraged, and stabbed the magician.
Narration:
深手をおった魔術師は ハイラルを呪うことばを残して逃げさった
Gravely wounded, the magician fled, cursing Hyrule with his parting words.
Narration:
姫は死んではいなかったが 魔法のせいで眠りに落ちたままだった
While the princess was not dead, she had fallen into a lasting sleep.
Narration:
兄王は 姫を こんな目にあわせた自分の愚かさを 深くくやんだ
Seeing the princess like this, the young king deeply regretted his own foolishness.
Narration:
姫にかけられた 魔法をとくために あらゆる手段がとられた
He tried everything to lift the magic that had been cast on the princess.
Narration:
しかし いかなる妙薬名だたる魔法使いも姫を目ざめさせることはできなかった
But no wondrous miracle cure, no famed mages were able to wake her.

Narration:
先王が残したと思われる宝箱が発見されたが これもまたあけることはできなかった
A treasure chest was discovered, thought to have been left behind by the previous king, but he was not able to open it, either.
Narration:
そんな時 １人の預言者が遠い未来に印を持つ戦士が現れ宝箱をあけるだろうと告げた
It was then that a seer foretold him that, in the distant future, a warrior bearing a mark would appear, and open the treasure chest.
Narration:
兄王は いつか姫がよみがえることを願って宝箱とともに 姫をこの部屋に安置した
Wishing for the princess to be revived one day, the young king enshrined her in this room, alongside the treasure chest.
Narration:
私 おろかなる兄王は
姫の悲劇を忘れぬよう
代々王家に生まれる
女の子には必ず
姫と同じ「ゼルダ」の名を
つけるよう命じた……
I, the foolish young king, have declared that all girls born into future generations of the royal family must be given the same name as the princess, "Zelda", so that her tragedy may never be forgotten...
Zelda:
選ばれた戦士よ 願わくば 失われたトライフォースを取りもどしゼルダ姫を目ざめさせハイラルに真の平和をもたらさんことを……
"O, chosen warrior, I pray that you will retrieve the lost Triforce, awaken Princess Zelda, and bring true peace to Hyrule..."
